This is the Year

Posted in Ryan's Rant on January 3, 2007 by Ryan

Hear you me, my brothers, this is the year. Yep, the hiatus of slacking off and being slow is officially over. Last year was a toe back in the waters of racing and I have to say, the water was warm. Since bagging the whole racing thing cold turkey like 8 years ago to “graduate college” and “stop living with my parents” and “do data entry for pay” I’d suspected the day would come when I’d saddle up and “ride long distances” and “drink recovery drinks” and try to beat the people reading this post by “getting in a breakaway or surprising you by jumping at 1k to go in the Turkey Race because I thought Schmalz was fast enough to tow me to the line which proved to be a gross misjudgement on my part” and now that day has come. Yes sirs (and ma’ams), I am back in the saddle. Gone are the days of being known around here as the kid who went to college with Jeff King (Is Awesome). Now are the days where I’ll be known as the kid who tried really hard to give a leadout to Jeff King (Is Awesome) but cracked a little too early but who you know will try the same stunt again in a couple of weeks. This is going to be awesome.

Wintertime

Training Summary:

So far, training has been better than last year.  But that hasn’t been hard to do because this time last year, I was recovering from shoulder surgery (I crashed in the 2005 Turkey race and broke my collarbone) and had to take 9 weeks off the bike.  So, this year’s weekend rides have been a big improvement from the vicodin hazes of last year.

We formed Bandit Racing with the idea of having a very low-key team of friends who ride and race together for fun.  We don’t take ourselves seriously as a cycling team and all have similar racing goals (none?). So far, it has been working as planned and The Banditos have been riding on the weekends together, which is a blast.  Immature behavior and bathroom humour is at a premium on these rides.  We just go out and B.S. the whole time; it reminds me of the good old days of college racing in Colorado.  We met up with Ted Neu a few days ago and he stopped in Nyack with us.  I can comfortably say that Ted was the most intelligent, sane, mature person I have ridden with in a long time.
