Just south of Rock Springs, WY. Very cold and windy!

Where J and I got married. It is called Flaming Gorge and it is in Utah just south of the Wyoming border.

The ride to Amherst was planned to take place on a Saturday in late July. Maps were studied, pacing plans were argued, and food choices were considered. I felt kind of like a general preparing his troops for battle. Except, I was the only soldier! I did a couple of 50 mile rides a few weekends before the big day and they left me totally punch drunk by the end. Still, my anticipation for the big day did not flag.
As the only member of the Developmental Team I get to see how the Bandits work from the lowliest member’s point of view. I’m not sure how exactly why I’m on the Developmental Team as I did my first bike race in October of 1994 at the age of 15. It was a mountain bike race in Sturbridge that I begged my father to take me to. I had been mountain biking all summer with my friends and I heard about it through the grapevine and for some reason it sounded like a great idea. I convinced my friend Tim to do it with me and we started “training” by riding a 5 mile lap near our houses as fast as we could 3 days a week. I rode in cut off jean shorts and a cheap black Bell helmet. I was too self-conscious to even consider wearing anything made out of spandex.
